Ontario Chamber of Commerce: 1 Million Dollars for 100 Companies-Ontario Exporters Reach New Markets

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 21, 2009) - Companies across Ontario have received a total of one million dollars to export to global markets, from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC). The OCC cost-sharing program, Export Market Access (EMA) is designed to help Ontario's small and medium sized enterprises diversify their exports. The program is managed by the OCC with funding from the Government of Ontario, and since its inception in 2008 has assisted 100 companies.

"Funding for these companies comes at a crucial time, as some see their traditional markets contract, threatening productivity and job growth here in Ontario," explains Len Crispino, President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. "Just a small helping hand can make the difference as leading Ontario firms adjust to new global trade realities."

The approved companies have received on average $10,000 to support their efforts to make international direct contacts, conduct market research and develop tools specifically for new foreign markets. These companies vary in their specialties and are located across the province including the GTA, Ottawa, Brantford, Kitchener, Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie, London and Stoney Creek.

"Our government supported this initiative to give exporters across the province some assistance in breaking into new markets, and growing their business," said Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development and Trade. "We encourage our exporters to take bold steps to widen their markets and develop strategic partnerships, in order to provide new areas of growth for Ontario's economy."

Recipients operate in a variety of sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, professional and technical services, marketing, wholesale trade and culture.

Applications are processed on a continuous intake basis and many more applications are currently being reviewed. Funding decisions are made within 30 business days upon receipt of fully completed applications. The online application and information regarding eligibility criteria can be found at exportaccess.ca.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) is a federation of 160 local chambers of commerce and boards of trade in the Province of Ontario, representing 60,000 businesses of all sizes, in all economic sectors and from every area of the province. In its mandate to advocate strong policies on issues affecting its members, the OCC is currently focused on economic renewal and business competitiveness. Its over-arching goal is to make Ontario the most competitive jurisdiction in North America.
