The Ontario Co-operative Association: Local Leader in the Ontario Co-Operative Sector Celebrated

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 17, 2006) - The man behind a drive to develop and market gender-neutral pewter pins to support cancer research is being recognized for his outstanding innovation and commitment. Robert Fairbairn, senior loans officer at Espanola and District Credit Union, will receive a Co-operative Innovator Spirit Award during the upcoming annual Co-op Gala and Spirit Awards in Burlington.

Nominated by a credit union co-worker, Fairbairn, of Espanola, received praise for promoting public awareness of credit unions and working as a community volunteer, especially on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society. In particular, Fairbairn is recognized for developing the pewter pin in honour of his late sister, to raise funds for cancer research. Espanola and District Credit Union was very supportive of Fairbairn's efforts. According to Fairbairn supporter, the pin has been sold at Espanola and other Ontario credit unions, "not only increasing the Co-operative Spirit in his own community but across the province..."

On Wednesday, October 18 - in the midst of National Co-operative Week - members of co-operatives and credit union representatives from across Ontario will honour not only their roots but also those individuals who have contributed significantly to the ongoing growth and development of this increasingly powerful business sector.

Under the theme of Share, Learn, Grow, the Co-op Gala presents a day of meetings, workshops and networking opportunities, and culminates in the annual Co-operative Spirit Recognition Awards dinner. The Gala takes place at the Royal Botanical Gardens, (680 Plains Road West), Burlington.

Gala sponsors include co-operatives of all sizes - Credit Union Central of Ontario, Gay Lea Foods Co-operative, GROWMARK, Inc., The Co-operators, BDO Dunwoody, the CUMIS Group, the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (Ontario Region), Growthworks Capital Ltd., Iler Campbell, Lerners LLP, Meridian Credit Union, Ontario Natural Food Co-op, Prentice, Yates and Clark, AgEnergy Co-operative, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Canadian Alternative Investment Co-operative, Foss National Leasing, Land O'Lakes Feed, Unisync Group Ltd. and Moonscape Multimedia. The Spirit Awards dinner will feature food items provided by Ontario co-operatives.

The Gala and Spirit Awards are presented by the Ontario Co-operative Association. On Co-op is the primary resource in Ontario for the development and enhancement of co-operatives and credit unions across the province.
