The Ontario Co-operative Association: Local Leader in the Ontario Co-operative Sector Celebrated

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 17, 2006) - A man whose dedication and hard work have strengthened the co-operative movement in North Wellington is being recognized for outstanding innovation and commitment. John Tregunna of Mount Forest will receive a Lifetime Achievement Co-operative Spirit Award during the annual Co-op Gala and Spirit Awards later this month in Burlington.

Nominated by North Wellington Co-operative Services where he served until his retirement, Tregunna received high praise for serving as a role model for current and future co-operators. John is a senior statesman within the co-operative and demonstrates the power of directors to support the efforts of employees toward improving the co-operative. In the words of his nominator, the former fulltime farmer has "lived his beliefs, and as a co-operative representative, supported it 100 per cent. He shows a great passion for his co-op, concern for issues facing it and is an advisor to other elected leaders..."

On Wednesday, October 18 - in the midst of National Co-operative Week - members of co-operatives and credit union representatives from across Ontario will honour not only their roots but also those individuals who have contributed significantly to the ongoing growth and development of this increasingly powerful business sector.

Under the theme of Share, Learn, Grow, the Co-op Gala presents a day of meetings, workshops and networking opportunities, and culminates in the annual Co-operative Spirit Recognition Awards dinner. The Gala takes place at the Royal Botanical Gardens, (680 Plains Road West), Burlington.

Gala sponsors include co-operatives of all sizes - Credit Union Central of Ontario, Gay Lea Foods Co-operative, GROWMARK, Inc., The Co-operators, BDO Dunwoody, the CUMIS Group, the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (Ontario Region), Growthworks Capital Ltd., Iler Campbell, Lerners LLP, Meridian Credit Union, Ontario Natural Food Co-op, Prentice, Yates and Clark, AgEnergy Co-operative, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Canadian Alternative Investment Co-operative, Foss National Leasing, Land O'Lakes Feed, Unisync Group Ltd. and Moonscape Multimedia. The Spirit Awards dinner will feature food items provided by Ontario co-operatives.

The Gala and Spirit Awards are presented by the Ontario Co-operative Association. On Co-op is the primary resource in Ontario for the development and enhancement of co-operatives and credit unions across the province.
