The Ontario Co-operative Association: Renewable Energy Leader in Ontario Co-Operative Sector Celebrated

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 16, 2006) - Ontario Co-operative Association -

A Hamilton-Halton-Haldimand based renewable energy co-operative will receive the New Co-operative of Distinction Spirit Award in recognition of its success in the area of renewable wind energy and leadership in the community power sector.

Positive Power Co-operative, (PPC) is the first renewable energy co-op in Ontario to use the not-for-profit structure to raise capital. PPC's goal is to develop community-based green power projects in Ontario by selling bonds to the community, rather than traditional shares. PPC has plans to develop wind community owned projects in Flamborough and Lake Erie.

In nominating PPC, Co-operative Developer Russ Christianson, praised the co-op for its leadership saying, "With increasing numbers of smog days, escalating energy costs, and dire warnings from the scientific community regarding climate change, Positive Power Co-op is leading its community in developing a community-owned wind energy resource that does not create greenhouse gases." The PPC board, its community members and dedicated staff have all been key participants in the emerging renewable energy co-op sector, including successfully advocating for a standard offer contract system in Ontario.

On Wednesday, October 18 - in the midst of National Co-operative Week - members of co-operatives and credit union representatives from across Ontario will honour not only their roots but also those individuals who have contributed significantly to the ongoing growth and development of this increasingly powerful business sector.

Under the theme of Share, Learn, Grow, the Co-op Gala presents a day of meetings, workshops and networking opportunities, and culminates in the annual Co-operative Spirit Recognition Awards dinner. The Gala takes place at the Royal Botanical Gardens, (680 Plains Road West), Burlington.

Gala sponsors include co-operatives of all sizes - Credit Union Central of Ontario, Gay Lea Foods Co-operative, GROWMARK, Inc., The Co-operators, BDO Dunwoody, the CUMIS Group, the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (Ontario Region), Growthworks Capital Ltd., Iler Campbell, Lerners LLP, Meridian Credit Union, Ontario Natural Food Co-op, Prentice, Yates and Clark, AgEnergy Co-operative, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Canadian Alternative Investment Co-operative, Foss National Leasing, Land O'Lakes Feed, Unisync Group Ltd. and Moonscape Multimedia.
