Ontario Construction Secretariat Hosts 9th Economic Conference

The OCS & Leading Economists bring to light a “Cautiously Optimistic Picture” for the Construction Industry in 2009.

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, Media Editor, News Editor ETOBICOKE, ON, PRESS RELEASE--(Marketwire - March 4, 2009) - Etobicoke, ON, March 4, 2009: The Ontario Construction Secretariat hosted the State of the Industry & Outlook Conference March 4th, 2009, at the Doubletree by Hilton, Airport Hotel.

This annual State of the Industry and Outlook conference is structured to provide attendees with an opportunity to hear and react to the opinions of professional industry experts. The annual conference is provided free of charge by the OCS as a service to our industry stakeholders.
Chief Executive Officer, Sean Strickland says, "The Message is quite clear, the sky is not falling in the construction industry. Obviously there are some sectors of the Ontario economy that are experiencing extreme difficulty , but in the Construction sector what we heard clearly today is that 2009 is going to be a very good year. 2010 will be a be little more questionable but largely dependent on infrastructure spending and if infrastructure spending is released by the Federal and Provincial governments the Construction industry looks like it will weather this economic storm quite well"
Featured speaker, Dr. Lloyd Atkinson, a widely respected economist and forecaster, provided an overview of the economic conditions in an engaging and down to earth style to help unravel current economic indicators and predict future economic developments for Canada and Ontario. John Wright from Ipsos Reid delved into the attitude and opinions Canadians have on the economy.

Finally, Katherine Jacobs, the Ontario Construction Secretariats highly respected Director of Research provided attendees with her always anticipated, regional perspective on ICI construction activity in Ontario. Jacobs, acknowledged that, "Ontario's Construction Industry had a strong 2008 and while some of our contractors that we surveyed are looking to be a little more pessimistic for opportunities for 2009 the federal stimulus package that's been announced by the government will certainly go a long way to mitigate some of the downturn of the industry."

About the OCS
The OCS was created by an amendment to the labour Relations Act in 1993. The twenty five organized building trade unions (the Workers) and the signatory contractors (the Employers) of Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) construction are the grass-root business partners comprising the OCS.

Together with representatives from the Provincial Government, we form a tripartite organization whose purpose is to enhance Ontario's unionized construction industry by developing relationships, facilitating dialogue, providing value added research, and coordinating the dissemination of information to our stakeholders to promote and enhance the well being of organized ICI construction sector in Ontario.

The OCS is a facilitator promoting relationships and interactions among its' component business partners to identify, research and inform regarding issues of common concern, including data to assess current and future construction market trends.

"WE" seek to facilitate an improved competitive position for our partners through upgraded knowledge, direct relations with buyers and owners, an enlightened fact-based public awareness and by encouraging our youth to become respected members of the unionized craft building trades.
