Ontario Energy Association Recognizes Hydro Ottawa for Leadership and Corporate Performance

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 18, 2008) - The Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies has been recognized by Ontario's premier energy trade organization for a year of stellar performance, winning the Ontario Energy Association's (OEA) Certificate of Achievement for Leadership and Corporate Performance.

The OEA's Achievement Awards are awarded annually to recognize outstanding companies, recognize and reward outstanding individuals, and promote ever-higher levels of achievement and innovation in the energy sector. A distinguished panel chaired by the Hon. Brian Tobin selected this year's award recipients, through a rigorous process overseen by a fairness advisor. Hydro Ottawa was among those honoured at the annual OEA Awards Dinner held Wednesday evening in Niagara Falls.

"This is the first time we've given out an award with 'Corporate Performance' in the title, and it describes perfectly the reason Hydro Ottawa is being recognized," said Shane Pospisil, President and Chief Executive Officer of the OEA. "Across the board, from shareholder returns, to technological innovation, from safe and healthy work practices to the creation of more renewable energy, Hydro Ottawa had an outstanding year in 2007, and we're pleased to be able to recognize their exceptional performance."

"Our sole focus as a group of companies is to deliver solid value to our shareholder, our customers and the community we serve," said Hydro Ottawa's President and Chief Executive Officer, Rosemarie Leclair. "By keeping our focus on our stakeholders, we believe that strong performance will follow, and this award validates that approach. We're very pleased with what we've been able to achieve so far, and looking forward to the opportunities that the future will bring."

Hydro Ottawa received the award based on a year of significant achievements, some of which are listed below.

Financial Performance

- Achieved a consolidated net income of $27.291 million, which enabled the corporation to declare a dividend of $16.375 million to its shareholder, the City of Ottawa.

- Maintained its record as one of the lowest cost distributors in Ontario on a per customer basis, with some of the lowest rates in the province.

Renewable Energy

- Increased its renewable energy generation capacity by approximately 35%, by adding a new hydroelectric generation facility on the Ottawa River and completing a landfill gas to energy plant at the City of Ottawa's Trail Road landfill.

Conservation and Energy Efficiency

- Achieved 75.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity savings over the past three years through Conservation and Demand Management programs - enough electricity to power more than 8,355 homes for a year.

- Recognized for its work promoting sustainable energy use with the 2007 Ontario Clean Air Alliance PeakBuster award.

- Launched the Companies for Conservation initiative, to celebrate and promote conservation projects in the business sector.

Technology Integration

- Established the largest functioning Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) System in Canada, with more than 145,000 customers being billed based on Smart Meter data by year-end.

- Completed a Geographical Information System, which provides an interactive map of the electrical distribution system, including the age and type of each component. This system helps improve service, as staff can quickly diagnose problems when outages occur.

Customer Service

- Implemented a strategy to respond to customer inquiries on the first call.

- Continued to provide industry-leading service reliability. Over the past three years, the average Hydro Ottawa customer has experienced only one outage every 17 months.
