The Ontario Environment Industry Association (ONEIA): Province's Economy Becoming "Greener" in Wake of Recession

Environment Companies Discuss Transformation to Greener Ontario at Annual Queen's Park Day

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 18, 2010) - Ontario companies are emerging from the recession and moving into an era of "lean and green" operations, according to the province's environment industry. Not only will companies focus on being more competitive, the Ontario Environment Industry Association (ONEIA) noted, they are increasingly concerned with reducing their use of energy and water, their generation of waste and their overall environmental footprint.

The Association representing Ontario producers of environmental goods, clean technologies, products and services stressed this ongoing transformation of the economy at its annual event at Queen's Park today. Members of ONEIA met with politicians and senior policy staff at the organization's 10th annual Environment Industry Day.

"The environment has been on the radar for Ontario companies for some time," says Tom Heintzman, President of Bullfrog Power and 2010 Chair of Environment Industry Day, "As we emerge from the recession, though, we're seeing a heightened emphasis on the environment. More and more Ontario companies are realizing that an environmental focus can help grow their businesses. The greening of the economy will be one of the biggest drivers of economic growth over the next generation and Ontario has an opportunity to be a leader in this area."

Ontario's environment industry is made up of more than 2,700 firms across the province that employ more than 65,000 people. This growing part of the province's economy will be a key asset as industry makes this green transformation, helping it respond to the booming world market for environmental goods, services and technology. Global demand in this sector is expected to grow to over USD$700 billion annually in coming years, offering a significant opportunity for Ontario companies.

ONEIA is the business association for Ontario's environment industry. The Association's members include environmental product, service and technology companies, research institutes, universities and governments. Through their innovation and experience in Ontario and around the world, ONEIA's members provide market-driven solutions for society's pressing environmental problems.
