ONTARIO FEDERATION OF LABOUR NEWS CONFERENCE

TUESDAY, 11 OCTOBER AT 11:00 A.M. HOLIDAY INN KINGSTON-WATERFRONT, SIR JOHN A. MACDONALD ROOM, 2 PRINCESS STREET, KINGSTON Attention: Assignment Editor, Environment Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Media Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 7, 2005) - An Ontario Federation of Labour news conference in Kingston will release a report compiled by the OFL on the desperate state of health care workers in virtually every sector of the health care system.

The Report, Understaffed & Under Pressure: A reality check by Ontario health care workers, outlines the conditions of the exhausted workers who are trying to provide the proper care to our society's sick, injured and frail in the face of our understaffed health care system. The Report calls on the provincial government to restore and strengthen the public health care system.

Earlier this year the OFL went on a fact finding tour of 17 cities across the province and spoke with the people who deliver the care in our health care system: workers in emergency services, homecare, hospitals, long term care, retirement homes, mental health and public health. This is their Report.

In attendance at the news conference:

Peter Boyle, President, Kingston & District Labour Council
Irene Harris, Executive Vice-President, Ontario Federation of Labour
Susan Prettejohn, First Vice-President, Ontario Nurses' Association

With the release of the Report the OFL is launching a province-wide campaign to pressure the McGuinty Liberal government to hire more health care workers throughout the system.
