ONTARIO FEDERATION OF LABOUR NEWS CONFERENCE

UNDERSTAFFED & UNDER PRESSURE - More Health Care Workers NOW! Campaign - OPSEU Region 6 Office 425 Algonquin Blvd East, Unit 11, Timmins, Ontario Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. Attention: Assignment Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 19, 2005) - An Ontario Federation of Labour news conference in Timmins will release a report compiled by the OFL on the desperate state of health care workers in virtually every sector of the health care system.

The Report, Understaffed & Under Pressure: A reality check by Ontario health care workers, outlines the condition of the exhausted workers who are trying to provide the proper care to our society's sick, injured and frail in the face of our understaffed health care system. The Report calls on the provincial government to restore and strengthen the public health care system.

Earlier this year the OFL went on a fact finding tour of 15 cities across the province and spoke with the people who deliver the care in our health care system: workers in emergency services, homecare, hospitals, long term care, retirement homes, mental health and public health. This is their Report.

In attendance at the news conference:

John Berry, President, Timmins and District Labour Council
Sue Ryckman, Ontario Nurses' Association, Local 10
Wayne Samuelson, President, Ontario Federation of Labour

With the release of the Report the OFL is launching a province-wide campaign to pressure the McGuinty Liberal government to hire more health care workers throughout the system.
