Almost 50,000 elementary school children gathered in gymnasiums across Ontario this morning for the launch of the annual Brush-a-Mania oral health program sponsored by the Rotary Club and the Ontario Dental Association (ODA).

The Honourable George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long Term Care kicked off the month long program today at St. Anselm Catholic School in Toronto, accompanied by Dr. Steve Goren, Past-President of the Ontario Dental Association (ODA).

"It is very important that children learn about oral healthcare while they are young because oral health is such an important component of overall health," said Dr. Goren. "This event is fun and it helps instil habits that will benefit them throughout their lives."

Brush-a-Mania is just one of the ODA's educational activities during Oral Health Month this April. Community events around the province will build awareness about the importance of oral health for all ages.

Over 149 schools are participating in this year's Brush-a-Mania program which is designed for children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6. The highlight of the event is a three minute "brush off" which took place in all participating schools at exactly 10:20 a.m. this morning.

Founded in 2001, Brush-a-Mania is an annual program designed to promote oral health and awareness among young children. Its purpose is to educate and motivate children, and to bring together dentists, Rotarians, teachers and parents to create a celebration around proper oral health care.

The Brush-A-Mania Program

The students track their brushes for the entire month of April in the classroom and at home in their booklets. Each student receives a toothbrush and a Brush-a-Mania booklet containing activities and games, as well as, a take home chart for them to mark off their daily brushes. Students who complete the program receive a loot bag containing sugarless gum, stickers and a Brush-a-Mania Club Member certificate.
