Ontario Long Term Care Association Honours Four Nursing Professionals

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 11, 2013) -

Four Ontario nursing professionals, with a combined track record of 78 years in professional long term care among them, have been awarded the 5th Annual Ontario Long Term Care Association (OLTCA) Nursing Leadership Awards. The Awards honour and celebrate nursing leaders in OLTCA's 441 member homes providing quality care to more than 70,000 Ontario seniors.

In recognizing this year's winners, OLTCA CEO Candace Chartier, said "These four individuals represent the best of the best - Ontario nursing professionals committed to proving the highest possible quality care to our province's most fragile population, and at the same time, inspire their colleagues to provide exemplary care."

OLTCA recognized four outstanding nursing professionals (two registered nurses and two registered practical nurses), each of whom will receive a leadership development cash award of $2500:

Deborah Beckman, RN, Executive Director for People Care AR Goudie in Kitchener whose hands-on approach to patient care has made a difference in the life of residents.

Chantel Weatherbed, RN, Nursing Care Coordinator and Continuous Quality Improvement Coordinator at Valley Manor Nursing Home in Barry's Bay, leads the home's Behavioral Supports Ontario program and championed it's Resident's First Program.

Susan Sajadian, a Registered Practical Nurse at Chartwell's Aurora, Ontario Long Term Care Residence is being recognized for her exceptional clinical knowledge and her "above and beyond " support of both patients and colleagues.

Sunleen Rathor, a Registered Practical Nurse at Chartwell's Westbury Long Term Care Residence in Etobicoke whose work has led to improved staff education and training programs, which in turn, has translated into higher quality intervention and care planning for responsive behaviors.

The Award is sponsored by 3M Canada and this year's award winners were chosen through a rigorous review process on the part of a selection panel comprised of:

  • Dr. Kathy McGilton, Senior Scientist, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute
  • Dianne Martin, Executive Director, Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario
  • Dr. Lori Schindel-Martin, Associate Professor, Nursing, Ryerson University
  • Amy Krishnathasan, Out of Hospital Channel Marketing Manager, 3M Canada
  • Fran Kleinsteuber, Professional Services Specialist, 3M Critical and Chronic Care, 3M Canada
