Ontario Museum Association Launches 8th Annual May is Museum Month

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 30, 2007) - The ONTARIO MUSEUM ASSOCIATION (OMA) is pleased to announce the launch of its 8th annual May is Museum Month bilingual and province-wide awareness campaign, featuring special events and exhibits offered to the public at museums, historic sites and art galleries all across Ontario. The month-long event supports International Museum Day, celebrated globally on Friday May 18th, 2007.

"May is Museum Month offers the public an incredible array of hands-on activities, celebratory events, exhibits, lectures, concerts and free admission to many of Ontario's museums," comments Marie Lalonde, Executive Director, OMA. "At the same time, it's a wonderful way to raise awareness and support for our dynamic heritage institutions across the province."

Featured events for this year's May is Museum Month initiative include: May is Museum Month launch ceremony and unveiling of the flag saved in the 1916 Parliament fire (Bytown Museum, Ottawa, May 3rd); Mother's Day activities at museums across the province, including festivities at the National museums in Ottawa, all on May 13; Victoria Day tea parties, and an International Museum Day (IMD) and 50th anniversary celebration (Doon Heritage Crossroads, Waterloo, May 18th).

Along with many other museums, Brant Museum and Archives launches a summer season full of exciting events on May 18th (IMD). 2007 also marks the 40th anniversary of several Ontario museums (including Arnprior and District Museum), all of which were founded during the Centennial year of Confederation, 1967.

The May is Museum Month wrap-up event will highlight an exhibit opening called "From Generation To Generation: Celebrating What Museums Do", featuring an appearance by OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino (OPP Museum, Orillia, May 28th). See attached page for more information about these and other events.

Ontario's 600-plus museums, historic sites and art galleries cover a fascinating range of subjects and collections, ranging from agriculture to medicine, shoes to cheese, broadcasting to mining, sports to science and many more. All of them, in their unique way, tell the stories of the people who built this province: our heroes, inventors, and First Nations forebears. At the same time they preserve our diverse cultural heritage, and in so doing, foster mutual understanding, cooperation and peace amongst the peoples of this province.

The ONTARIO MUSEUM ASSOCIATION is a non-profit professional association of Ontario museums, historic sites and art galleries and its employees and volunteers, as well as companies and individuals serving the heritage industry. For 35 years, the Association has promoted museums and advanced the standards of professionalism for museum workers throughout Ontario.
