Ontario Museum Association's 10th Annual "May Is Museum Month" Event Launches May 5th at Queen's Park

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 5, 2009) - The ONTARIO MUSEUM ASSOCIATION (OMA)'s 10th annual May is Museum Month was launched today with a special Museum Day at Queen's Park. The leadership of Ontario's museum community met with MPPs to raise awareness about the intrinsic value of museums in the building and sustaining of vibrant communities across Ontario.

"May is Museum Month is a celebration of the contributions museums make to our communities," said Culture Minister Aileen Carroll. "Museums play a vital role in attracting visitors, promoting community development, and connecting Ontarians with local heritage and history."

Nearly one hundred members of the Ontario Museum Association, the voice of more than 650 Ontario community museums, art galleries and historic sites, met with MPPs on all sides of the House.

"We are delighted by the response May is Museum Month is receiving at the Legislature," commented Marie Lalonde, Executive Director of the Ontario Museum Association. "Museums in this province are at the heart of our communities. We attract tourists, we educate, we improve quality of life - and we contribute considerably to the economy!"

The May is Museum Month bilingual province-wide campaign continues throughout May with special activities and exhibits in museums, historic sites and art galleries all across Ontario. The month-long campaign builds on International Museum Day, celebrated globally on Monday, May 18th, 2009.

May is Museum Month brings public attention to Ontario's museums, historic sites and art galleries. Each museum tells the story of its community, the people who built and are building this province - heroes, inventors, First Nations leaders. These sites are a rich educational resource for a fascinating range of subjects, including agriculture, medicine, broadcasting, mining, sports, science - even cheese & shoes. They also celebrate and preserve our diverse cultural heritage and help foster mutual understanding, cooperation and peace amongst the peoples of this province.
