Ontario NDP: Facts on Dalton McGuinty's Tuition "Relief"

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 4, 2007) -

Dalton McGuinty has been no friend to struggling students.

In 2003, Dalton McGuinty promised: "The Harris-Eves government raised tuition a staggering 45 percent for basic undergraduate programs and allowed tuition to skyrocket in programs such as medicine, law and engineering. We will not let this continue." (Ontario Liberal Plan for Economic Growth, 2003).

In 2003, tuition fees were rising at the rate of inflation. However, after freezing tuition for two years, McGuinty announced a plan to increase rates by four to eight per cent a year - ultimately climbing as much as 36 per cent higher. Currently, tuition fees are higher than they would have been if the Harris-Eves policy of increasing tuition fees in step with inflation had remained in place.
