Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation Applauds PISA Results

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 8, 2010) - Yesterdays announcement of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results in reading, mathematics and science indicate that Ontario's students are performing very well in all three disciplines in comparison to students in 75 other jurisdictions throughout the world.

"These results demonstrate that strong investments in our education system at all levels pay strong dividends when it comes to our children's success in learning," stated Ken Coran, President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation.

According to the announcement, Ontario students were outperformed only by Shanghai China when it comes to reading ability. It also indicates that Ontario's education system has been more successful than most others at mitigating the negative effects of socio-economic disparity between high and low income families.

Coran offered, "When a government works in a collaborative way with front line educational workers on delivering initiatives intended to improve student learning, everyone wins regardless of how much their families earn. Education is the great leveller in a society providing opportunities for future success."

"In the last eight years we have seen a government make strong commitments to both education and those that work within the system each and every day. Our members have been active participants in helping students perform better in all areas of learning and development through these investments. We should take pride that much has been accomplished during this time while we recognize much more can and will be done given the government's continuing recognition in the importance of education," concluded Coran.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, early childhood educators, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
