Ontario's CAs and CMAs Vote to Unite Under the CPA Banner

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 27, 2013) - On June 26, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) and Certified Management Accountants of Ontario (CMA Ontario) announced their respective memberships have voted to approve unification of their professions as Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs).

"This is a historic day for Ontario's accounting profession and for the more than 57,000 individual accountants who will now be brought together as CPAs," said Rod Barr, FCPA, FCA, President and CEO of the ICAO. "Together, we'll form what will be the largest provincial CPA body by far and operate in a manner that both protects the public interest and ensures the future growth and success of the accounting profession."

"Our members have clearly told us that unification is the best strategy for building upon the strengths of the CMA and CA professions," said Merv Hillier, CPA, FCMA, President and CEO, CMA Ontario. "Today's vote will be remembered as a milestone on the road to creating a new united CPA Ontario accounting body."

The Ontario results mirror those of other jurisdictions across the country. Unification between CAs, CMAs and, in most cases Certified General Accountant bodies as well, is approved or underway nationally and in every province. In fact, 38 of Canada's 40 accounting bodies, representing more than 85 per cent of the nation's accountants, are committed to unification.

To transition members to the new designation, for the next 10 years CMAs and CAs will be required to tag their legacy designations with a CPA, such as CPA, CA or CPA, CMA.. As new students enter the education program, they will graduate as CPAs only, ensuring that the CPA designation is the future of accounting in Ontario and across Canada.

The ICAO and CMA Ontario anticipate development of a comprehensive unification agreement by the end of November 2013 with the goal of beginning the integration of operations at the beginning of 2014.
