Ontario's first Gamma Knife arrives Tues at Toronto Western Hospital

Location: Toronto Western Hospital, 399 Bathurst Street

Weighing 22.5 tonnes, the Gamma Knife will arrive in three pieces and will be hoisted to the third floor of the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Family Gamma Knife Centre. The Gamma Knife will be the first of its kind in the world located above grade level and will become part of the of the Krembil Neuroscience Program's state-of-the-art medical imaging centre.

The Gamma Knife will be used for surgically inaccessible arterioveneous malformations, difficult brain tumours, drug-resistant movement disorders, pain, and epilepsy. Multidisciplinary teams from the Toronto Western Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital will work together to deliver treatment to about 300 patients a year. The Gamma Knife will be operational in the fall of this year.
