Ontario's NDP: Hampton is First Leader to Visit Hamilton During Campaign

HAMILTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 10, 2007) - This afternoon, just a few hours after launching his party's campaign at Queen's Park in Toronto, NDP Leader Howard Hampton headed straight to Sam Lawrence Park, where he energized an enthusiastic crowd of supporters.

"Dalton McGuinty's record has been one broken promise after another," Hampton thundered. "Now he's trying to sell Ontarians a new set of promises. But the people of Ontario won't buy it. McGuinty's record is sticking to him."

While Hamilton-area NDP candidates looked on and applauded, Hampton added: "McGuinty promised change. But he hasn't delivered. Hard-working Hamiltonians look back over the past four years and see job losses, stagnant wages and skyrocketing property taxes."

Instead of solving the province's manufacturing crisis and raising minimum wage to a fair rate of $10 an hour, McGuinty gave himself a $40,000 raise, then created a multi-million dollar slush fund that was shut down by the provincial auditor.

"Hamiltonians expect fairness," Hampton said to loud cheers, "and Ontario's NDP will deliver." He pointed to Hamilton Centre NDP MPP Andrea Horwath as an effective local politician who fights for cleaner air, affordable post-secondary education, better long-term health care, and other issues that really matter to working families. "We need your help to elect more NDP MPPs like Andrea, who will fight for a fair deal for Hamilton. All of our candidates in the region are terrific community leaders who know the value of hard work, and who want to work hard for you."

Hampton said he is especially proud to be the first party leader to campaign in Hamilton following the dropping of the election writ. His next stop is a campaign event in Toronto tonight at 7, where he will be joined by NDP candidates from that city.
