Ontario's NDP: Why Believe McGuinty's Childcare Promises This Time?

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 21, 2007) - Dalton McGuinty has promised child care before. In 2003, McGuinty promised $300 million for early childhood education: "Public schools will become our community hubs, with full-day junior and senior kindergarten eventually available for all four and five-year-olds" (Ontario Liberal Plan for Education, 2003, Page 6).

He broke that promise. It didn't happen.

Now McGuinty is promising the exact same $300 million dollars - and parents and education activists are asking whether they intend to keep the promise. Liberals have already admited they haven't calculated all the costs:

"The Liberals have costed the all-day Kindergarten proposal at $300 million, but that doesn't include the cost of capital projects, said Liberal spokesperson Ben Chin."

New Democrats have estimated that full-day JK and SK would cost $800 million - McGuinty's committed half this much. The word "kindergarten" doesn't even appear in his platform. Why should hardworking families believe McGuinty this time?
