Ontario's NDP: Wynne Supported Faith Funding After Private School Tax Credit

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2007) - McGuinty Minister Kathleen Wynne claims she became an opponent of funding for faith-based schools after the Conservative government brought in the private school tax credit.

The public record indicates otherwise.

The tax credit was announced on May 9, 2001 in the provincial budget.

In the May 24, 2001 edition of Now Magazine Kathleen Wynne said: ""I'm disappointed we didn't come out earlier on this. I think we could have claimed some ground."

In the June 7, 2001 edition of Now Magazine, Wynne wrote a letter to the editor stating: "In Ontario people of one faith get preferential treatment in the school system. This situation is historical and, as such, has become part of the fabric of our society. Because it is part of our history, however, does not mean we cannot question or examine its validity. That is precisely what the United Nations has asked us to do, and that is exactly what I advocate.... Now, once again, we Liberals are forced to react to one of Harris's destructive, divisive pieces of legislation. What's worse, we have to pretend that we think there is an easy, simple answer to this question."

Both comments were made after the introduction of the private school tax credit.
