OnTrace Board Voices Support for the Governments of Canada and Ontario's New Traceability Foundation Initiative

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 20, 2011) - The Board of Directors of OnTrace Agri-food Traceability (OnTrace) today affirmed their support for the new $21.5 million Traceability Foundation Initiative that was announced yesterday by The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

"This new Federal-Provincial cost share funding will significantly enhance agri-food traceability in Ontario by providing serious funding opportunities for agri-food traceability projects and in so doing will also raise the positive profile of food traceability," explained Bruce Saunders, Chair of OnTrace. "One of our challenges with industry shareholders is the perceived cost of implementing traceability programs. This new three year initiative backed with a robust funding program sends the strong message that government is not only supportive but prepared to back that with significant economic funding."

To Brian Sterling, CEO of OnTrace, the Traceability Foundation Initiative is a message of encouragement to the industry and support for services like the Ontario Agri-food Premises Registry (OAPR) and the OnTrace Verified Network (OVN) both of which OnTrace owns and operates. "OnTrace is led by industry and our services are voluntary information sharing networks that have become key components of Ontario's traceability vision. We are here to help industry achieve the benefits of traceability. This is an important initiative for Agriculture and food and a major enabler for traceability in Canada and Ontario."

The Traceability Foundation Initiative will support projects led by the agri-food industry to share information, enhance industry competitiveness and improve the speed in which Ontario responds in the event of a food product recall. The federal and provincial government have put a $21.5 million funding program in place for the next three years, providing up to 75% cost share funding. Furthermore the announcement indicated that approved projects might be eligible for up to a maximum of $5 million in funding per project.
