OPEL Solar, Inc. Launches New Mk-IX High Concentration Photovoltaic Solar Panel Technology

- Improved Modular Design Reduces Manufacturing Costs, Improves Reliability

- Estimated 20-25% Increase in Energy Performance Over Previous Generation

SHELTON, CONNECTICUT and TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 12, 2010) - OPEL Solar, Inc. ("OPEL" or "the Company"), a leading global developer and supplier of high concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) panels and industry-leading solar tracking systems, announced today the launch of its latest HCPV solar panel, the Mk-IX. 

The OPEL Solar Mk-IX High Concentration Photovoltaic Panel (HCPV) is a high performance, reliable, cost-effective product designed for utility grade grid-connected solar systems in medium to high solar irradiance climates. The Mk-IX Panel uses a dual-element refractive concentrator architecture, in combination with triple junction solar cells produced by Boeing-Spectrolab. The high efficiency of the OPEL Solar HCPV panel results in significantly higher power generation per unit of area when compared with both silicon flat panel and thin film installations.

"This new version of our successful HCPV concentrator improves performance while reducing cost," said Dr Javier Berrios, OPEL's Vice President of Engineering. "By using a more modular design, we are able to reduce overall manufacturing time, which reduces costs, while also increasing overall energy production per panel and reliability." The new Mk-IX concentrates light at more than 600 times. The new version also improves energy conversion efficiency, achieving its performance ratings at an irradiance of 850 watts per square meter, placing it among one of the highest efficiencies for solar panels in commercial production today.

Because of its standardized design, the Mk-IX concentrator will offer users increased durability and reliability. Additionally, the new Mk-IX concentrator technology uses a less complex, easily repeatable assembly process that can be transferred to different markets, thus generating more local manufacturing jobs.

The Mk-IX concentrators will begin shipping in the spring of 2011.
