Open Houses Regarding Beaconsfield's Waste Reduction Strategy: Residents are Invited to Become Informed and Make Their Voices Heard

BEACONSFIELD, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Oct. 2, 2014) - The City of Beaconsfield is pleased to announce a series of open houses regarding its Waste Reduction Strategy on October 21, 22 and 28. The City invites all residents to attend in order to become informed and make their voices heard.

"Beaconsfield's vision is clear: we want to manage all waste streams responsibly and efficiently by offering adapted and flexible services to our residents", indicated Mayor Georges Bourelle. The implementation of the Strategy could translate into additions to and modifications of services, an adjustment in costs and changes in habits. "Despite our efforts and existing services, in Beaconsfield we generate more than 7, 000 metric tons of domestic waste per year. More than 50% of it could be diverted from landfills" stressed the Director of Public Works for the City of Beaconsfield, Mr. Andrew Duffield. The City is now looking at addressing the problem at the source and is proposing a strategy focused on reduction.

Targeted actions on green residue collection, backyard composting, grasscycling, as well as examining the possibility of implementing the polluter pays principle and a pilot project on waste reduction lie at the heart of the proposed Waste Reduction Strategy. Comments and proposals from residents, in addition to the results of the pilot project, will be taken into account for the development of the final Strategy.

The Open Houses will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the following locations and times:

  • Tuesday, October 21, at Beaconsfield United Church, 202 Woodside Rd.
  • Wednesday, October 22, at the Herb Linder Annex, 303 Beaconsfield Blvd.
  • Tuesday, October 28, at Beacon Hill School, 170 Alton Drive

Residents who participate at the Open Houses will receive 10 free paper leaf collection bags while quantities last.
