Open Mobile Alliance to Bring Together Industry Leaders at Mobile World Congress 2014 to Demonstrate Unique Future Mobile Concepts

An Opportunity to See the Entire Mobile Ecosystem Come Together to Showcase Open Specifications for Next Generation Mobile Services at the World's Largest Industry Event

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Jan 22, 2014) - The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) announced today that they will host their 2nd annual demonstration day at Mobile World Congress on Wednesday February 26, 2014 from 15:00 to 19:00 in Hall 8, Theatre D of the Fira Gran Via, Barcelona.

Visitors to the event will see a variety of pioneering demonstrations and presentations in this four-hour spectacular from OMA companies such as ARM, Comverse, CSR, Friendly Technologies, Gemalto, Huawei, Mformation, Red Bend Software, Smith Micro, Telecom Italia and Vodafone, as well as from associations that collaborate with OMA such as GS1, IPSO Alliance and Open Geospatial Consortium.

Attendees can expect to get exclusive insight into how the OMA and other Standards Development Organizations (SDO's) are enabling broader adoption and delivering open specifications for the Internet of Everything. Exciting hands-on demonstrations will include a life size automotive console, multiple Android devices and the widely speculated Google Glass platform.

"We are excited to be back at Mobile World Congress for the second year running to once again showcase how OMA Enablers are driving developments in the mobile industry across so many vertical sectors," said Gary K. Jones, Chairman of the OMA Board.

The Google Glass platform will be on show as part of the demonstration from Swiss research institute iCare in conjunction with GS1 and OMA to show the power of barcodes on product packaging to receive nutritional information and recipes, save coupons and share on social media websites. GS1 and OMA standards (OMA Mobile Code Enabler) are critical in enabling this vision of the connected consumer of the future whose shopping trip and product usage are augmented with trusted information and services.

Using the OMA Mobile Augmented Reality (MobAR) Enabler, Huawei will be showcasing their 'Looklike' demo, which extracts age, gender, and emotion information from an image of the user's face. Based on this information, the demonstration makes targeted recommendations of products and services to the user.

Highlighting the applicability of OMA Enablers for automotive applications, Red Bend's innovative and compelling demo will be presented on a life size automobile console. Red Bend will demonstrate how software management is used to manage head units, in-vehicle infotainment systems and engine control units. With software management the OEM benefits from production efficiencies and reduced recalls. The dealership saves time and money. The Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) can offer services based on existing OMA Device Management (OMA-DM) infrastructure and the consumer realizes an improved driving experience.

Two member companies -- ARM and Vodafone will be highlighting the OMA Lightweight M2M (LWM2M) Enabler. ARM will be demonstrating end-to-end software and rapid development for the efficient management of and communication with Internet of Things devices using the OMA LWM2M Enabler. A server side web application and an OMA LWM2M server will be shown using the ARM Sensinode NanoService solution demonstrating both device management and application data over the same system.

Vodafone will demonstrate their cellular 3G router, which has an embedded OMA LWM2M prototype client to support remote management of M2M devices via a LWM2M web server from Device Insight. The OMA LWM2M prototype implementation was developed as part of a Vodafone R&D/Innovation Park project jointly with Device Insight and NetComm Wireless.

Following on with the widely talked about Internet of Things topic, Mformation will be demonstrating its uniquely scalable, high-performance solution for managing the Internet of Things, providing a horizontal, standards-based device management platform for performing key device activation and configuration, software update and remote diagnostics functions on the projected billions of connected M2M devices used in a wide range of industries. The Mformation solution supports multiple OMA Management Objects (MOs) based on OMA DM infrastructure to meet a wide range of vertical industry requirements on a single platform.

Comverse will demonstrate its new offering, embodying an approach that enables MNOs to rapidly build a critical mass of users for new IP-based services by modernizing traditional voice and messaging services with a rich user experience on any connected device. Comverse's offering is built on the OMA Converged IP Messaging (CPM) Enabler, which Comverse strongly endorses and recommends for every MNO seeking to become a significant player in the digital life of their subscribers.

Location-based services (LBS) will be addressed by CSR, using the SiRFusion platform, which uses the OMA Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) Enabler for location aiding and standard OMA interfaces for data transfer. Through the fusion of MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems), GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), Wi-Fi and other signals of opportunity, the SiRFusion solution provides high quality continuous indoor location. The solution is fully crowd sourced, is not dependent on new infrastructure or infrastructure upgrades being installed and supports Bluetooth Smart beacons.

Telecom Italia will demonstrate an innovative smartphone development device, backed by Telecom Italia and intended to be offered to developer's communities, industrial partners and Universities, as a reference implementation of the best current open standards. This reference smartphone model aims at maximizing the user's Quality of Experience (QoE) and the exploitation of next generation wireless networks, through the new OMA framework "Generic Open Terminal API."

Using OMA Software Component MO, Gemalto will demonstrate how MNOs can use Android smartphones to promote their own apps, branding and partners' apps. They will demonstrate how their Push App Solution helps MNOs to deploy applications onto their customers' smartphones. The Gemalto mobile agent is a software component that follows the OMA-DM standard. It, thus, enables the server to manage Android smartphones.

Friendly Technologies, a provider of unified OMA-DM and TR-069 device management solutions for mobile and fixed operators, will be showcasing their innovative 4G LTE/ WiMax Device Management (MDM) and Quality of Experience (QoE) & Monitoring solutions. Based on the OMA-DM Enabler, Friendly's MDM Solution streamlines the deployment and support of sophisticated mobile devices, Fixed and Nomadic 4G LTE and M2M devices allowing mobile operators to remotely manage all mobile devices on a single platform. Friendly's QoE solution measures quality of service at the subscriber endpoint, enabling Service Operators to proactively identify problems before the customer feels them, reducing service calls and churn and increasing satisfaction.

Smith Micro will showcase its NetWise Policy-on-Device solution for intelligent network connectivity and remote device control. Utilizing OMA-DM and ANDSF (Access network discovery and selection function), NetWise helps to reduce congestion, improve quality of service, and increase efficiency for operators and enterprises by measuring user experience and seamlessly transitioning data between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Smith Micro will demonstrate ANDSF interoperability, as well as device and data management for an M2M module commonly used in telematics, adding carrier-grade connectivity, security and interoperability to M2M deployments.

This unique session can be seen on Wednesday February 26, 2014 in the Theatre District, Hall 8.0, Theatre D, from 15.00 - 19.00. To register to attend this event, please go to www.mobileworldcongress.com/open-mobile-alliance/.
