Opengear Showcases Failover to Cellular(TM) for Unmatched IT Resilience in the Internet of Things Age

Speaking and Exhibiting at M2M Evolution, Opengear Demonstrates How to Ensure Always-on Availability of Connected Devices

MIAMI, FL--(Marketwired - Jan 27, 2015) - Opengear (http://www.opengear.com), a leading provider of critical infrastructure management solutions through advanced console servers, remote management, monitoring, and cellular out-of-band products, today announced the first live demonstration of its Failover to Cellular™ capabilities for ensuring the uninterrupted availability and connectivity of network-connected devices. The new feature designed for business continuity -- that helps solve key challenges for Internet of Things' companies -- debuts at M2M Evolution, where Opengear will exhibit the technology at Booth #228.

Failover to Cellular™ (F2C) is Opengear's newest product capability for providing IT resilience in the face of continually escalating connection demands. F2C allows for automatic Internet connectivity backup via high speed 3G or 4G LTE networks when the primary Internet link has failed. Disruption is eliminated, and primary link connectivity is then restored when it becomes available. The technology complements Opengear's Smart OOB™ capability, which provides cellular-enabled remote management that automatically and proactively detects and helps resolve the issues that occur with distributed networks.

As with Smart OOB™, F2C is built into all Opengear remote management solutions, including IM infrastructure management and ACM remote site management devices.

"The cost of network downtime has never been higher," said Rick Stevenson, CEO, Opengear. "Connectivity hiccups -- let alone full-blown outages -- commonly result in million-dollar revenue losses and affect virtually all industries. Add to that the proliferation of connected devices vying for always-on connectivity and even more stress will be put on networks. How businesses respond is critical; with Opengear's new Failover to Cellular™ and Smart OOB™ technology, we're providing an unparalleled solution for ensuring IT resilience with maximum uptime. Network connection failures happen, but they don't have to be crippling -- or even noticeable -- with Opengear."

Opengear's Failover to Cellular™ capabilities include:

  • Transparent failover to 4G/3G cellular networks using simple and reliable IP Passthrough technology that allows business operations to continue while IT staff resolve connectivity issues with the primary Internet connection
  • Maintaining console connectivity to routers, switches, firewalls, and PDU to troubleshoot problems
  • Transparent "fail-back" when the primary connection is restored
  • Ease of use: F2C is a drop-in solution which works with most existing routers that have dual WAN support

M2M and the Internet of Things will play a significant role in the retail industry, and Opengear's Principal Product Manager, Shirish Nilekar, will be speaking at M2M Evolution on the strategies for maintaining point of sale systems in this dynamic environment. Nilekar speaks Thursday, January 29th, at 3:00pm ET.
