Opening of a New Exhibition at Rideau Hall

National Capital Commission Official Residences Crown Collection

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 9, 2010) - The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, in collaboration with the National Capital Commission (NCC), presents a new exhibition called the National Capital Commission Official Residences Crown Collection. The temporary exhibition will be held until March 2011, in the Ambassador's Room, at Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General of Canada. The opening will take place on Friday, December 10, 2010, at 3:00 p.m.

The new exhibition highlights and explains the origins, role and significance of the Crown Collection, which is the result of nearly 150 years of collecting furniture and art to furnish and embellish official residences in the National Capital Region and at the Residence of the Governor General at the Citadelle of Québec. Over the years, purchases and donations have helped this collection to grow and take on significant heritage value.

Some of the items on display during this exhibition include the New Born Pride sculpture by Saskatchewan artist Lloyd Pinay; a game table (1820–1830) by Thomas Nisbet, a famous cabinetmaker from New Brunswick; a Hepplewhite-style settee dating from the 1900s; a chest of drawers decorated with marquetry that belonged to former prime minister Mackenzie King; an entrance hall chair dating back to 1865 that was part of the original furniture at Rideau Hall; a portrait of John A. Macdonald painted by D. Patterson in 1886; the painting La Rivière by Quebec artist Jean Paul Lemieux (1964); the piece Boat by Christopher Griffin, a contemporary Ontario artist; and the MacKay-Keefer Legacy Cup (1830–1831).

The public can visit this exhibition as part of the guided tour of Rideau Hall. Please call 1-866-842-4422 for reservations.
