Opportunity Abounds in the Antibody Market

A New Report From Biocompare, Inc. Finds Little Brand Loyalty in the Research Antibody Market

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 26, 2007 -- A new report from Biocompare, Inc., "2007 Antibody Report: Current Trends and Future Outlook," based on a survey of over 800 researchers, finds that 60% expect to increase the number of antibody-based applications performed over the next 12 months. With nearly one-third of antibody users currently spending more than $1,000 per month on antibodies, the market is predicted to grow considerably in the coming year.

Antibodies represent the largest segment of biotechnology reagents currently in use today, bringing in over $8.8 billion last year alone. Western Blotting, Immunofluorescence, ELISA, and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) are the most commonly performed antibody application among researchers. Chromatin IP (ChIP) is the application most users (10%) specified they have plans to perform, indicating possible future growth in this market segment.

Cell signaling/signal transduction antibodies and secondary/immunoglobulin-specific antibodies are the top two types of antibodies used by survey participants. Santa Cruz was the top company from which all types of antibodies are purchased (54.9%), followed by Sigma (44.9%) and the Invitrogen companies (Invitrogen, Zymed, Caltag, Molecular Probes, and Biosource; 40.8%). Of the 20 different categories of antibodies provided in the survey, Santa Cruz was one of the top three companies reported in 17 categories, Cell Signaling Technology in 8 categories, the Millipore companies and BD Biosciences/Pharmingen in 7 categories, and Sigma and Abcam in 5 categories.

The survey uncovered that the majority of researchers shop around for every antibody they purchase, indicating little brand loyalty among antibody users. With 33% unable to find commercial sources for certain antibodies, suppliers have to keep up-to-date on new targets and applications in order to maintain market share.
