Opportunity for Drug Makers in Products That Assist Anesthesia Process

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Apr 16, 2012) - The fastest growing area of the anesthesia drug market in terms of sales is adjunctive therapies that assist the anesthesia process in some form, according to a study published by Kalorama Information. Drugs that relax a patient's muscles, relieve anxiety or wake patients up after surgery are growing faster in terms of revenues than the anesthetics themselves, according to the healthcare market research publisher. The market for all anesthesia drugs, including adjunctive drugs, reached $5.3 billion according to Kalorama Information's report, "World Anesthesia Drug Market (General, Local, Adjunctive)."

"Many anesthetic drugs are off patent, so it's the adjunctive agents that many firms have turned to for revenue growth," said Melissa Elder, analyst for Kalorama Information and author of the report.

Adjunctive therapies, which include muscle relaxers such as Tracrium or Tubarine, and drugs that relieve anxiety prior to anesthesia such as Atropine or Diazepam, have become a growing category. Drugs that can reverse the effect of anesthesia, reduce the effect of opioids or wake a patient, such as Flumazenil or Naloxone, have also seen intense competition and sales. Sales growth for these types of drugs will more than double the growth rate of the overall anesthesia drug market, according to Kalorama Information.

Companies such as Merck, Baxter, Roche and Abbott are among the competitors in this market. Competitive leadership in both the brand and generic markets will greatly depend on technology advancements, new formulations and delivery methods. The report finds that many products are currently reliant on the increasing number of surgical and diagnostic procedures worldwide, which will likely continue due to a growing population.

More details on this market and specific numbers for drug categories are provided in Kalorama Information's complete market research report on the topic. "World Anesthesia Drug Market (General, Local, Adjunctive)" breaks out segment revenues and forecasts and discusses products in development for the local, general and adjunctive therapy segments. The report also discusses in detail important issues and trends and profiles key companies.
