OPSEU Media Advisory-Community Picket of Central East LHIN Symposium Tonight in Oshawa

OSHAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 16, 2008) - The Central East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) is making major changes to the region's health services without planning or consultation.

These include the ill-advised move to cut acute care mental health beds, and more cuts to major bed cuts at Centenary hospital, including surgery beds and cardiac care beds.

Now it is about to unveil a plan to force every hospital in the Central East LHIN -- including Whitby Mental Health, Rouge Valley and Lakeridge -- to contract out one per cent of their operating budget to a community-based agency.

Community groups and unions plan to picket the LHIN today as the organization holds a symposium. The event will be held:

When: Monday, June 16 -- 5:30 p.m. until 6:15 p.m.

Where: Main entrance of UOIT / Durham College, 2000 Simcoe St. North, Oshawa.
