Opto 22 Authors PAC White Paper

"Understanding Programmable Automation Controllers in Industrial Automation" Now Available for Download

TEMECULA, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 23, 2006 -- Opto 22, a developer and manufacturer of hardware and software for industrial automation, remote monitoring, data acquisition, and machine-to-machine (M2M) applications, has announced the release of a new white paper covering the advent of the programmable automation controller and its increasing use in modern industrial applications.

Cooperatively developed by Opto 22's engineering and marketing divisions, "Understanding Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) in Industrial Automation" explores how PACs were first developed, outlines their defining characteristics, and highlights the similarities and differences between PACs, PLCs, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and other industrial controllers and devices.

The paper also discusses the many functional and financial benefits of using PACs for industrial automation, control, monitoring, and data acquisition applications, and offers suggestions on PAC selection and deployment. Finally, there is a brief introduction of Opto 22's new line of SNAP PACs, which includes both standalone and "on-the-I/O-rack" controllers.

"Understanding Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) in Industrial Automation" was recently posted in Control Engineering magazine's Online Resource Center and the Automation.com website. The paper can also be downloaded directly from the Opto 22 website at http://www.opto22.com/site/documents/drilldown.aspx?aid=2813. Also available are a number of related online educational tools and tutorials, including the Flash presentation "What is a Programmable Automation Controller" (available at http://www.opto22.com/site/le_demos_demo8.aspx) and a PAC FAQ.
