Or Hadash Synagogue Welcomes Rabbi Michal Shekel

NEWMARKET, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 10, 2011) - The Board of Directors of Or Hadash Synagogue is delighted to announce the appointment of Rabbi Michal Shekel as the congregation's spiritual leader.

"We are pleased to welcome Rabbi Shekel to our community," said Or Hadash President Larry Raifman. "Or Hadash will benefit from her spiritual leadership and expertise in community outreach."

Rabbi Shekel is excited to be joining Or Hadash and becoming involved in all facets of synagogue life. "There's a high level of enthusiasm and commitment here," she said. "I look forward to being part of this growing Jewish community."

Rabbi Shekel was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and was a member of the first class of women accepted to the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. She is the Executive Director of the Toronto Board of Rabbis and has served congregations in both Canada and the United States. Author, teacher and recipient of a Bronfman Rabbinic Leadership scholarship, Rabbi Shekel has served as a board member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and as the chairperson of the Reform Rabbis of Greater Toronto. Rabbi Shekel teaches adult classes in Toronto covering a variety of Jewish topics and writes a weekly on-line Torah study for Kolel. She has also been a board member of the Canadian Centre for Diversity, and the Christian Jewish Dialogue of Toronto as well as on the boards of organizations dealing with Jewish continuity and education, outreach, interfaith issues, racism, and drug and substance abuse. 

Or Hadash Synagogue, a member of the Union for Reform Judaism, has been serving the Jewish community of northern York Region since 1993. Or Hadash offers warm, friendly and family oriented egalitarian Shabbat and High Holy Days services. The synagogue offers religious school, holiday celebrations, and a variety of adult and youth programs.
