Orange County Community Foundation Launches $750,000 Community Challenge as Emergency Response to Economic Downturn

"See the Need, Seed the Change" Campaign to Match $2 for Every $1 Donated (up to $250,000)

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - February 20, 2009) - With a goal of infusing at least $750,000 into local nonprofits serving Orange County's most vulnerable residents, the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) ( announced the launch of its first-ever community-wide campaign: "See the Need, Seed the Change." The Community Foundation will match $2 for every dollar contributed (up to $250,000) between February 20 and March 20, 2009.

"This is Orange County's rainy day," said Shelley Hoss, president of the Orange County Community Foundation. "In this economic downturn, it is critical that we all demonstrate the kind of generosity that Orange County is known for and we hope that every family, individual and business will join us in this community-wide response during a time of extraordinary need."

Hoss explains that half of the funding for the match comes from Orange County Community Foundation's discretionary funds and the other half was contributed by OCCF donors. The "Seed the Change" response will focus on providing grants to established Orange County-based nonprofits serving three vulnerable populations affected by the current economic crisis, including:

-- Families seeking first-time assistance
-- At-risk children
-- Frail elderly

Nonprofits that meet specific criteria will be pre-qualified by OCCF and invited to apply for funding.

Hoss noted a recent study of OC nonprofit organizations indicating that more than half are seeing an increase in demand for services and yet they are at risk of losing state funding. She said, "This is the community's opportunity to help our friends and neighbors at risk today with the hope that they'll be back on their feet tomorrow."
