Orange County Community Foundation's ReachOut OC Program Delivers $500,000 to Local Nonprofit Organizations

Support Aids Vulnerable Families and Children in Orange County

NEWPORT BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 29, 2011) - Yesterday $500,000 in grants was awarded to 20 Orange County-based nonprofit organizations providing food, shelter, health care and special needs services to vulnerable families and children. The grants are the result of the ReachOut OC 2011 community fund drive launched May 2 by the Orange County Community Foundation.

Grants from $15,000 to $30,000 will fund a variety of safety-net services for neighbors in need, including food pantries and meal services, housing and rental assistance, health care services and assistance for individuals with special needs.

"Our local nonprofit sector continues to be stretched beyond capacity. Demands for basic services like food, shelter and health care continue to rise as funding continues to erode. ReachOut OC is designed to deliver funds to these nonprofits so they can provide a hand up to vulnerable families and children in our community," said Shelley Hoss, president of the Orange County Community Foundation.

Families Forward of Irvine reports that in the last year volunteers answered 7,400 phone calls from people seeking assistance, a 42 percent increase over a year ago. It received a $30,000 grant for its Homeless Prevention Program, which provides assistance to families at risk of becoming homeless.

This is the third year that OCCF has offered a community initiative to help neighbors in need. This year's grants bring the cumulative grants to over $2 million over the past 2 years.

"ReachOut OC provides a simple and meaningful way for Orange County residents to reach out and support their neighbors in need. We were overwhelmed with the generous response of the community, which allowed us to provide meaningful support during a time of continuing challenge for so many," said Hoss.

In May, the Orange County Community Foundation committed $325,000 to "safety-net" services as the centerpiece of its 2011 grant-making strategy. Individuals and organizations from across Orange County made contributions ranging from $5 to $25,000, resulting in $500,000 in grantable funds. Because OCCF is underwriting 100 percent of program expenses, every dollar contributed will be delivered to nonprofits meeting critical needs.
