Orange County Nurse Addresses Issue of Fertility Preservation for Cancer Patients at International Conference

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 3, 2007 -- Joan Moody, RN, CNP has been a nurse for 34 years and has worked with fertility expert Dr. David Diaz at West Coast Fertility Specialists for the past 14 years. She was invited by the Society of Gynecologic Nurse Oncologists to address fertility preservation for cancer patients at their 24th annual conference to be held in Atlanta, Georgia this month.

Moody explains, "Oncologists are generally not thinking about fertility issues when treating a female cancer patient who may want to have children in the future."

She is working with Dr. Diaz to inform oncology nurses and physicians across the country to explain new options available to women who have to undergo cancer treatment but want to preserve their eggs or embryos for a future pregnancy.

They explain that the main issue is working within a short time frame. Patients need to understand their options early on so there is time to select and undergo fertility treatments prior to their cancer treatments.

Egg freezing (or oocyte cryopreservation) is a new option for women to preserve their eggs for future insemination. Women with partners may choose to fertilize their eggs and freeze embryos prior to cancer treatments.

In her presentation this month, Moody will explain that an estimated one in 52 women under the age of 40 will be diagnosed with cancer with a five-year survival rate at 63%. She'll also discuss the possibilities of ovarian failure and their effects on bearing children following cancer treatments.

Established in 1988, West Coast Fertility Centers is one of the largest and most established Centers of its kind in Orange County.
