Oregonians for Sound Fuel Policy Issues Statement Following Public Hearing on Low Carbon Fuel Standard

PORTLAND, OR--(Marketwired - Nov 7, 2014) - We all want cleaner air and a healthy environment, but as Oregon's Environmental Quality Commission heard Thursday, a Low Carbon Fuel Standard is not the best way to achieve those goals.

As commission members learned from small businesses and individuals who testified at the hearing and submitted more than 70 letters opposing the LCFS, the scheme acts as a hidden gas tax, piling additional costs on businesses and on every consumer who buys fuel. It's also infeasible. There aren't enough low-carbon fuels available, which necessitates a credit-purchasing system, adding even more costs.

We've proposed alternatives that are technically feasible -- through electric vehicle, hydrogen or natural gas programs, for example. We'd like to continue working with the governor and his staff to explore these options, as they offer greater environmental benefits and pose fewer consequences for Oregonians.

Oregon is already a leader in low greenhouse gas emissions. Let's keep it that way while also making sure to protect the state's economy, its businesses and its residents.
