ORHMA Applauds Federal Support for Tourism

Attention: Business/Financial Editor, News Editor, Travel/Tourism Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ON--(CCNMatthews - March 19, 2007) - The Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association (ORHMA) applauds Finance Minister Jim Flaherty for measures in today's federal Budget that will help Ontario's tourism industry.

"The establishment of a Foreign Convention and Tour Incentive Program is clear recognition of the importance of the tourism industry to Canada's economy," said ORHMA Chair Tony Elenis.

This new measure ensures that Ontario remains a competitive destination for foreign convention, group and tour businesses, important markets for hotels and others in the tourism industry. Conventions in Ontario were worth more than $410 million in direct spending by delegates and exhibitors last year.

"This new incentive program sends a positive signal to convention planners, group organizers and tour operators that Ontario is a welcoming destination and we are open for business," Elenis said.

The ORHMA also welcomes the government's new investment of $30 million annually to support local arts and heritage festivals. This new investment will encourage domestic tourism.

Tourism contributes more than $21 billion a year to the Ontario economy, and employs more than 415,000 people.

The ORHMA is Canada's largest provincial tourism and hospitality industry association, with more than 4,100 members representing 11,000 businesses throughout Ontario.
