The Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association applauds this morning's announcement by the provincial Minister of Tourism, Peter Fonseca, of an additional $30 million in funding to expand support to festivals and events and for marketing campaigns to domestic and international markets.

"This is a most welcome funding initiative for Ontario's struggling hospitality industry that depends so much on tourism," said Rob Evans, President and CEO of the ORHMA. "Both our foodservice and accommodation sectors in the province have been negatively impacted by several recent factors stifling tourism that are beyond our control. These most recent factors include a Canadian dollar trading at parity with the U.S. dollar, a troubling U.S. economic outlook led by the sub-prime mortgage crisis and an apparent lack of American interest in Ontario and Canada as a destination".

Since 9/11 in 2001, Ontario's foodservice and accommodation industry have been hit hard by a series of events that have resulted in continuously- declining American tourism including the West Nile scare, the SARS crisis, the NHL lockout, ever-higher gas prices, confusing U.S. passport requirements, tightened border security, and now, a soaring loonie.

Rob continues, "In Statistics Canada's latest October 2007 travel report, we see that while Canadian trips to the U.S. are at all-time highs, American visitors are at an all-time low. With the sizeable injection of provincial marketing funds, these trends can be turned around to help sustain our industry's 373,000 jobs and $18 billion contribution to Ontario's economy, not to mention the $5.8 billion generated in government revenues".

"We look forward to continuing efforts with government to ensure that those who work in our industry stay working and that new careers are created in this exciting and vital sector of our economy" states Rob.

The ORHMA is Canada's largest not-for-profit provincial hospitality association representing 11,000 establishments.
