ORHMA Welcomes Government Investment in Ontario Tourism

Attention: Business/Financial Editor, Food/Beverage Editor, News Editor, Travel/Tourism Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ON --(CCNMatthews - Oct. 26, 2006) - The Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association (ORHMA) welcomes the announcement of an Ontario tourism marketing campaign, as announced during the provincial economic outlook and fiscal review. An investment in domestic tourism marketing will result in more jobs for Ontarians and an injection into Ontario's economy.

Finance Minister Sorbara's announcement of the establishment of a campaign to encourage Ontarians to travel within their home province comes at a time when tourism numbers have fallen. The tourism industry is facing increased pressure from declining visitor numbers directly attributed to the high Canadian dollar and confusion over passport requirements, while still feeling the impact of several unpredictable challenges such as 9/11 and SARS.

Ontario's tourism industry GDP is greater than agriculture, forestry and logging, commercial fishing and hunting, and mining combined. In 2004 tourism GDP was $20.4 billion, accounting for 3.8% of provincial GDP. The Ontario government received $2.2 billion in tax revenues from the tourism industry in 2004.

"It is encouraging to hear the Minister of Finance recognize the value of the tourism industry and the contribution it makes to Ontario's economy" said Terry Mundell, ORHMA President and CEO. "New and dedicated resources to promote tourism to and within Ontario are crucial for the success and sustainability of this vital industry."

The ORHMA is pleased with today's announcement and looks forward to working with Tourism Minister Jim Bradley to ensure that Ontario becomes the premier destination of choice.

"Our history and heritage are maintained and celebrated in part by tourism" continued Mundell. "Our doors are open for business and we encourage all Ontarians to rediscover Ontario."

The Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association is Canada's largest provincial tourism and hospitality industry association, with more than 4,000 members representing 11,000 business establishments throughout the province.
