Orlando Plastic Surgeon Clarifies Benefits and Limitations of Liposuction Methods

Dr. James Matas Explains the Advantages and Constraints of Two Popular Liposuction Techniques to Provide a Detailed Resource for Patients Considering the Procedure

ORLANDO, FL--(Marketwired - Dec 18, 2014) - Patients seeking to reduce deposits of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise often turn to liposuction to enhance body contour, explains Dr. James Matas, a plastic surgeon in Orlando. In its most basic form, he says this procedure is designed to reduce stubborn pockets of fat in targeted areas, such as the thighs, abdomen, and love handles. He also explains that there are now several liposuction approaches being performed, including ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL), which may offer an improved outcome for qualified patients. He indicates that each method has distinctive benefits and limitations, which individuals should be aware of before developing a treatment plan.

Both tumescent liposuction, considered the traditional method, and UAL can provide fat reduction in unwanted areas, Dr. Matas explains. He says that some of the most popular regions to treat include the neck, as well as body areas, such as the upper arms, abdomen, hips, thighs, and back rolls. In addition to removing fatty tissue, he states that liposuction can be utilized to enhance body contour by creating a more aesthetically pleasing silhouette. The main difference between the two techniques, he discloses, is that liposuction utilizes cannula (tube) instruments to mechanically dislodge and remove fat while UAL uses ultrasound energy to break up fat cells. The fat cells will then be removed using a similar cannula technique as traditional liposuction.

Liposuction has been performed for decades and is generally considered to be a safe procedure, notes Dr. Matas; however, every surgery carries some risk of complications. Furthermore, he says that patients should be well-informed about what to expect after liposuction to help determine if this method is appropriate for their aesthetic goals. Both techniques can be effective at reducing small fat deposits, he states, though liposuction usually is not recommended for individuals who have a great deal of excess weight. Additionally, he notes that if patients regain weight after the operation, there may be other areas that will increase in size. Furthermore, he says UAL can improve the appearance by tightening some of the skin laxity.

Ultimately, Dr. Matas believes that well-informed patients are often able to make decisions that lead to higher satisfaction with results. By providing a detailed resource on the benefits, limitations, and recovery experience of liposuction, he says individuals, with the help of an experienced plastic surgeon, will be able to develop a customized treatment plan that best addresses their needs and expressed goals.
