Dr. Anthony Visco, Associate Professor, Director of the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, Director of Gynecologic Robotic Surgery, and Vice-Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center, will perform this minimally invasive procedure using the da Vinci® S™ Surgical System. Dr. Jennifer Wu, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, will moderate the event to explain critical portions of the surgery and answer e-mail questions from viewers.

Most sacrocolpopexies are currently performed via open incision given the difficult dissections and extensive suturing involved in this procedure. However, using the expanded capabilities provided by the da Vinci System, reconstructive pelvic surgeons can now perform the most precise, complete and durable sacrocolpopexy for vaginal vault prolapse, both safely and reproducibly, using a minimally invasive approach.

According to Dr. Visco, the da Vinci System facilitates anatomical dissection of tissue planes and visualization of mesh suturing sites. da Vinci also provides better access to difficult-to-navigate areas, such as the posterior vaginal wall and the sacrum, while providing greater surgical precision and control for dissecting the peritoneum, the anterior and posterior vaginal walls and sacral promontory. Lastly, suturing with the da Vinci System is significantly easier and quicker: Suturing is a critical component in this procedure, and is used extensively when attaching the graft to the anterior and posterior vaginal walls and the sacrum, as well as retroperitonealizing the graft.
