As Superintendent of Financial Institutions Canada and Chairman of the Basel Accord Implementation Group, Nicholas Le Pan has unique insight into the potential impact of Basel II on Canadian financial institutions. In his remarks, Mr. Le Pan will provide his perspective on the benefits of the Basel Accord, as well as discuss the effect of Basel II on Canadian operations outside of Canada. He will also provide an update on the current implementation status of Canadian banks and the results of a delay in implementation by the United States.

The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institution is responsible for the regulation and supervision of some 450 federal financial institutions and almost 1,200 federal private pension plans.
