OSSTF Applauds Liberal Platform Priority

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 6, 2007) - Dalton McGuinty and his government released their 2007 election platform today and made publicly funded education its focus. "The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) is pleased to see that support for publicly funded education is the main plank of the Liberal government's 2007 election platform," commented Ken Coran, President of OSSTF/FEESO. "Over the past four years, Dalton McGuinty and his government have opened the channels of communication with education stakeholders.

"OSSTF applauds the government's recognition that the education system is seriously under-funded and that the funding formula must be reviewed. Why wait until 2010 for that review? Move the funding formula review forward and provide the resources now that students need to be successful," Coran added.

"The initiatives announced indicate that more adults are needed in schools to make them safe and healthy learning environments where students have the support they need within and outside the classroom to succeed. OSSTF looks forward to the additional staff and the support they can provide to students across the province. The emphasis that the school is the hub, with board employed professionals delivering services to students, is a welcome recognition of the importance that the whole school team plays in promoting and improving student success," Coran concluded.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education and universities.
