OSSTF/FEESO Delegates Elect New Leaders

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 15, 2009) - Seven hundred delegates gathered at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel for the annual meeting of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) and elected new leaders to represent the 60,000-member educational union.

Elected were Ken Coran, president; Paul Elliott, vice president; Sandra Sahli, vice president; Earl Burt, treasurer; Harvey Bischof, executive officer; Scott Marshall, executive officer; and Susan Rab, executive officer.

Ken Coran, a science teacher from East Elgin SS in Aylmer and former local teacher bargaining unit president in OSSTF/FEESO District 11, Thames Valley, was elected as the provincial president of OSSTF/FEESO. He was first elected to the Provincial Executive as executive officer in 2001, as vice president in 2003, as president in 2007 and as a result of this year's election will continue to serve as president until 2011.

Paul Elliott, a teacher from Fort Frances High School, was first elected to the Provincial Executive as executive officer in 2005, vice president in 2007 and as a result of this year's election will serve as vice president until 2011.

Sandra Sahli, a child and youth worker with the Greater Essex County District School Board, was re-elected as executive officer in 2007. Locally, Sahli has served as president of the educational support staff bargaining unit in OSSTF/FEESO District 9, Greater Essex as well as District 9's chief negotiator. Sandra was elected this year as vice president.

Earl Burt, began his teaching career in Toronto in the early 1990's. Earl has worked as a full-time executive officer and as vice president for OSSTF/FEESO District 12, Toronto. As a result of this year's elections, Earl will serve as the OSSTF/FEESO treasurer until 2011.

Harvey Bischof, an English teacher with the Durham Region School Board, was elected to the Provincial Executive as an executive officer in 2007. Locally, he has served as district president of the OSSTF/FEESO in District 13, Durham. Harvey has now been re-elected as an executive officer until 2011.

Scott Marshall has been teaching since 1993. He taught for the Hamilton-Wentworth DSB, has taught physical education at a First Nations Ojibway community in Northwestern Ontario and has been a special education teacher for the Hastings and Prince Edward DSB. Scott is the president of District 29, Hastings-Prince Edward and as a result of this year's elections will serve as executive officer until 2011.

Susan Rab, is a teacher of history and geography at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School in Orleans. At the local level, Rab was Ottawa-Carleton teacher bargaining unit and district president from 2002 to 2006. Susan was elected to the Provincial Executive as an executive officer in 2007 and has now been re-elected as an executive officer until 2011.

The candidates were elected for a two-year term and will commence their duties as members of OSSTF/FEESO's Provincial Executive in June, 2009.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
