OSSTF/FEESO Recognizes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 25, 2013) - The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) recognizes November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the White Ribbon Campaign. The White Ribbon Campaign is the world's largest movement to end violence against women and girls, promote healthy relationships and support gender equality.

"We are proud to join many countries around the world to both recognize this important day, and to show solidarity with the campaign to end violence against women," said Paul Elliott, President of OSSTF/FEESO.

"Since 1991, wearing the white ribbon acknowledges the pledge that men and boys take to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls," continued Elliott. "I strongly encourage every male member of OSSTF/FEESO to wear a white ribbon and to work together to end gender-based violence in our society."

The White Ribbon Campaign runs through to December 6 with the recognition of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Elliott concluded by stating, "While we typically wear the white ribbon leading up to December 6 every year, we must remain consistently vigilant to end gender-based violence every day and everywhere."

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, early childhood educators, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, university support staff, and many others in education.
