OSSTF/FEESO Urges Members to Support Attawapiskat Students and Their Families

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 1, 2011) - The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) has consistently highlighted the problematic conditions existing at Attawapiskat First Nation. We have been a long-time supporter of their quest for proper educational facilities.

Recently, a state of emergency has been declared at Attawapiskat First Nation. Close to 100 of the community's 2000 members are living in temporary shelters with insufficient heating and no running water. Adults and children are being treated for medical concerns due to the poor living conditions of this village on James Bay. The Canadian Red Cross is now working to provide supplies such as generators, heaters, winter clothing and bedding to the community members.

"While the Harper government looks to blame the people of Attawapiskat for the housing crisis, OSSTF/FEESO remains supportive of the residents and is encouraging our members to help the people of Attawapiskat by making personal donations to the Canadian Red Cross and by contacting their local MPs and the Minister of Aboriginal and Northern Development, John Duncan, asking that the Federal Government work with the Community of Attawapiskat to find real solutions," stated Ken Coran, President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation. He added, "we must focus on the immediate needs of the community and also demand that the government look forward and develop and implement practical solutions for the future. The children and their families deserve no less."

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, early childhood educators, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, university support staff, and many others in education.
