OSSTF/FEESO Welcomes Mcguinty Government's Early Learning Strategy

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 28, 2007) - "The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) is pleased to see that the McGuinty government has moved quickly on a significant component of its election platform and has acknowledged the important role early childhood educators play in the education of young children," commented Ken Coran, President of OSSTF/FEESO. Coran was responding to yesterday's appointment of Dr. Charles Pascal as Premier McGuinty's Special Advisor on Early Learning.

"The appointment of Dr. Charles Pascal by Premier Dalton McGuinty indicates that this government understands the importance of early learning on the future success of our students as well as their futures beyond the school system. Dr. Pascal is infinitely qualified to study the issue and recommend the proper course for the implementation of an early learning strategy," said Coran.

"This decision is an important piece in this government's overall strategy for student success, however, it is a piece of the educational pie that will need added resources. It is also one that can only be effectively implemented once the present deficiencies in the funding formula are corrected." Coran concluded.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
