OSSTF Meets With OCDSB Representatives to Share Results of Recent Assessment and Evaluation Survey

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 30, 2009) - Representatives from the Ontario Secondary School's Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) District 25's Teachers' Bargaining Unit met with representatives of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board today. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the results of the recent Assessment and Evaluation survey developed by the Teachers' Bargaining Unit.

Kerry Houlahan, President of the District 25 Teachers' Bargaining Unit, said: " We had a good conversation about the issues and concerns identified by members. We are pleased that the OCDSB expressed interest in working together to find solutions. We expect to hear details from the OCDSB about solutions in the near future."

560 secondary public school teachers completed the electronic survey. The survey results show that many of the respondents are dissatisfied with the handling of missed assignments, skipped tests and plagiarism. In addition, teachers indicated that an ever increasing number of students are choosing to submit assignments late, plagiarize and skip tests. As a result, they also report a higher rate of student absenteeism.

Kerry Houlahan stated: " Teachers in Ottawa-Carleton are committed to providing the best educational opportunities to students and ensuring that they are well-prepared for life. To do so, we require policies, resources and supports that allow teachers to use their professional judgement and to do what is in the best interest of students. Teachers look forward to seeing these key issues addressed by the Board."

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
