OSSTF: Overwhelming Majority of Toronto's Public Secondary School Teachers Vote in Favour of Strike

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 31, 2009) - Today, secondary teachers in Toronto's public schools voted overwhelmingly in support of strike action to achieve a reasonable and fair contract in talks with the Toronto District School Board. The vote which took place in schools involves 6,500 teachers who are members of District 12 Toronto, of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF).

"This vote shows that Toronto high school teachers are very serious about getting a collective agreement and frustrated with the Toronto District School Board's violation of the conditions stipulated in the Provincial Framework Agreement, facilitated by the government and signed by a representative of the Toronto District School Board. The Board's failure to negotiate under these established terms, as was done by every other Board in the province, has forced OSSTF to file a charge with the Ontario Labour Relations Board. Our members have strongly voiced their objections to this position taken by the employer," stated Doug Jolliffe, President OSSTF District 12 Secondary Teachers' Bargaining Unit. "We are very pleased with the continued support received from our members here in District 12, which was highlighted just over three weeks ago, when over 3000 of our members attended our Rally for Respect to tell the board to negotiate a fair deal and treat us with respect."

"The result of this vote clearly indicates that Toronto teachers are prepared to take action to achieve a collective agreement in accordance with the Provincial Framework Agreement. It sends a powerful message to the Toronto District School Board that these teachers do not support the irresponsible position the board has taken in this round of negotiations," said Ken Coran, Provincial President of OSSTF and Chair of the District 12 Toronto Teachers' Negotiating Team. "We remain committed to bargaining in accordance with the Provincial Framework Agreement, but if the Toronto District School Board insists on continuing to adhere to it position of non-compliance with that Agreement, then Toronto teachers will stand up to its bullying tactics."

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
