OSSTF President Tells Assembly That OSSTF Will Not Rest Until All OSSTF Bargaining Units Have Collective Agreements

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 14, 2009) - In his address to the Annual Meeting of the Provincial Assembly (AMPA) as president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO), Ken Coran told the more than 700 delegates that OSSTF/FEESO still has some bargaining units without collective agreements and that until they are all completed, OSSTF/FEESO will not rest. OSSTF/FEESO's annual meeting is being held at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto from March 14 to 16.

"Every member, and I mean every member, has the united strength of OSSTF/FEESO backing up that promise. Our one bargaining unit that has not reached an agreement and that has received the most media attention is the District 12 Toronto teachers. These 6500 members are battling a local school board that now stands alone, that has rejected the parameters set out in the Provincial Framework Agreement and that is willing to forego $51 million in funding to force teachers to do more hallway patrol, rather than letting teachers teach", stated Coran.

Coran also announced to the assembly that the Toronto high school teachers will be taking a strike vote on March 31. "We will not, and I repeat, will not allow the employer to be the champion of contract strips. This bargaining unit is on the front line fighting for all organized labour", emphasized Coran.

The 90th Anniversary of OSSTF/FEESO's Annual Meeting and the 10th Anniversary of the first Francophone units which joined OSSTF/FEESO were also highlighted by Coran." As it continues to grow, our OSSTF/FEESO family becomes more influential and powerful in our work to protect and improve publicly-funded education", concluded Coran.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
