OSSTF: Provincial Schools Reach Agreement With Government

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 27, 2008) - Teachers who are members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) and who work for Provincial Schools in Ontario ratified a collective agreement, with their employer, the McGuinty government, on June 26.

The over 200 OSSTF teachers who work in Provincial Schools across Ontario that serve deaf, blind/visually impaired, deaf/blind, and incarcerated adults addressed a number of local priorities with their employer (the provincial government) and achieved resolutions that will ultimately contribute to the success of their students.

Al Pagnan, president of the OSSTF Provincial Schools Authority Teachers (PSAT), stated "The members are happy that a collective agreement was reached before the expiration of the current one. This is the first time in the history of the bargaining unit that this has happened. The government worked to effectively address our local priorities in a cooperative manner."

Added Ken Coran, president of OSSTF, "This agreement demonstrates how successful local collective bargaining should work. Our members and the government made this work for the teachers and students in Provincial Schools. OSSTF now calls on the government to commit to that successful model in all other school boards and settle contracts through local bargaining."

OSSTF PSAT represents 200 teachers in schools for the deaf, the blind and correctional institutions. Schools for the blind include Sir James Whitney in Belleville, E.C. Drury in Milton, Centre Jules Leger in Ottawa, and the Robarts School for the Deaf in London. The W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind is in Brantford and the correctional institutions include the Ontario Correction Institute in Brampton, the Thunder Bay Correction Centre Adult School, and the Wycliffe Booth House School near London.
